Dad |
As we speak my Mom and Dad are in Britain hiking the mountains and dales of the Lake District...in their 80's. My Dad is an amazing man who even through adult eyes can do anything. He is always there when you need a helping hand, can bake a mean loaf of bread and makes the best potato fritters known to man.
He is a talented stained glass artist painstakingly saudering thousands of pieces in each original window and lampshade and loves to ski at his local ski hill (sometimes in the half pipe and on the moguls) every morning during the season. He has learned to fly, and dreams of travelling to Chili to ski this summer. Skiing in the Andes is an exhilarating combination of Latin culture and the exciting terrain served up on the world’s longest exposed mountain range will be something for the memory books.
This sounds like an ad for a dating site doesn't it? He has piercing blue eyes and a captivating smile, likes long walks on the beach... Family vacations were always spent at the beach but these days he walks along the waterways in his home town and of course there is always hiking in the Lake District. Sorry ladies but he is taken and has been married to my beautiful mom for over 50 years!!!! I never had a chance to choose the man to be my Dad...but I sure thank my lucky stars for the taste my Mom had.
My dad has always been a vegetarian from the moment I could grasp his hand and discover the world... even when vegetarianism was not in the mainstream. I know that most of your dads and deserving men will not adhere to this lifestyle so here are some options to blow their socks off (did you buy your dad socks for Father's Day?) and to celebrate the day for those you adore.
What is more traditional than a barbecue on Father's day!!!!
Walk a little slower daddy
said a little child so small,
and I don't want to fall.
Sometimes your steps are very fast
sometimes they are hard to see,
so walk a little slower daddy,
For you are leading me.
Someday when I'm all grown up
you are what I want to be,
then I will have a little child
who will want to follow me.
I would want to lead just right
and know that I was true,
so walk a little slower daddy,
For I must follow you!

I'm still having difficulty with Father's Day, surprisingly more this year than last, but I love the story you tell of your father. It brings the good kind of tears to my eyes.

excellent homage to your pops, val! and my goodness, how could one ever narrow down this list of foods? i'd almost have to make each and every one to be satisfied. :)

Thank you for sharing your father with us. He sounds like a terrific man.
ReplyDeleteVal: The board is large with linear measurements. You can cut on it with a very sharp rolling cutter and it leaves no marks. Very mysterious! I'd never attempt an outfit. In fact, I still haven't finished the sleeveless, zipperless blouse from 7th grade home ec. And I was in 7th grade a long, long, long time ago!
ReplyDeleteBest,
Bonnie
A really loving and beautiful piece. I hope they internet service on the hiking trail so that your father can see this tomorrow. Sorry you couldn't be with him on Father's Day.
ReplyDeleteHey Val, lovely post, here's to us men!
ReplyDeleteCheers

Thank you for sharing a great example of what Fathers should strive to be like.
All the best, Claudia
Beautiful post Val, your dad sounds amazing as well as your mom. Hiking at 80! There must be something said for all the healthy eating he's done all his life!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely tribute to your father. Yes - it did sound like he was the catch of the century. An athlete,an artist, and a vegetarian. I have taken stained glass courses, and know how difficult it is - and am crazy over the art. So fortunate for you to be brought up in such an artistic and aware household.
ReplyDeleteAnd a great idea to post past recipes for such an occasion for ideas!
:)
