Years ago when I first started up on the internet I opened up a hotmail account as many do. I live in a valley so my name became valleygurl. Not the "like... whatever" valley girl of Frank Zappa fame but..... valley as in "I live in the Okanagan Valley". I have a girlfriend named Lillian who is "Lilly of the Valley". Aren't we clever? "Like...whatever!!!"
Now keep up with me here. Valleygirl was taken and so was valleygurl so I ended up with an even longer hotmail address.
When I moved and opened a cable internet account I wanted to keep the name Valley for significance sake...but it was taken... so, I opted for Valli instead. The name Valli has stuck with me for years. I sign all my correspondence using Valli.
To throw another loop into the story once I started blogging it came to my attention that Valli was an East Indian name. Many of my friends from that part of the world ask me about it. Valli means "creeping plant" in the Hindu culture. In Dravidian mythology the goddess Valli was the wife of Murunga. If anyone knows more about this Hindu myth I would love to know more!!!!Valli is also a legend in a story from Sri Lanka who married the God of the Mountain Kataragama . You can find out my story here .

Now where does the name Bellini Valli come from? Well a Bellini is my favourite frozen drink from Joey's Gobal Grill, Milestones..... Sometimes I am also Margerita Valli depending on my mood.
Simple as that........
The concensus is....just call me Val...... :)
So where's the recipe?????????? I leave you with my all time favourite cookie recipe. A little bit healthy.... Sometimes I add chocolate chips...sometimes raisins or dried cranberries.
**Val's Coconut Oatmeal Crisps**
1 cup butter
1 cup granulated sugar
½ cup firmly packed brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1-/14 cups regular rolled oats
¾ cup dessicated coconut
1-/1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
½ tsp. salt
granulated sugar

1 cup granulated sugar
½ cup firmly packed brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1-/14 cups regular rolled oats
¾ cup dessicated coconut
1-/1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
½ tsp. salt
granulated sugar
*********************
Grease 2 baking sheets and set aside. Cream together butter and both kinds of sugar; beat in the eggs, vanilla, oats and coconut. Stir together flour, baking powder, soda and and salt. Blend into batter.
Place teaspoonfuls of dough 2 inches apart on baking sheets. Flatten each cookie with a fork dipped in granulated sugar to keep it from sticking. Bake at 350 degree F for 8 to 10 minutes or until firm but still light coloured. Let cool on racks and store in airtight containers.
Makes about 72 crisps

What a beautiful story (about the Princess and the God)!
ReplyDeleteI always just figured your name was Greek because you love Greece so much. :)
If it makes you feel better, my niece's middle name is Blueberry because her brother helped name her.
I have been named an "honorary" Greek by Ivy..so that makes me happy!!
ReplyDeleteWow!, Like, interesting!
ReplyDeleteNothing nearly as fun about my name...any of them...
I just assumed it was a diminutive of Valery... sometimes I am totaly lacking in imagination!
What an interesting story you cared to share with us, and Valerie is a very beautiful name. (However I thought your name was Valih).
ReplyDeleteThanks for giving us the site for the names. I checked my name and actually my Greek name is Ivie (it's a name from the Greek mythology) but they used to call me Ivy at school so I always sign as Ivy.
..."like gag me with a spoon...!"
ReplyDeleteNow I know the Valli (and Cadbury) secrets!
I don't have a story behind my name... :( Coconut and oatmeal cookies sound good.
ReplyDeleteI had a hunch, the Bellini part came from the drink,LOL!! you had mentioned in a previous post that you love Bellini's. I always wondered if it was ok to call you Val too, now I know it was. Thanks for sharing that with all of us "Valley Girl"!!
ReplyDeleteYum! I love the combination coconut and oatmeal. I recently made a cookie similar to this and I'm going to have to try your version too! :)
ReplyDeleteThat's quite a history--I've got nothing to compete with that ("like whatever!").
ReplyDeleteThe cookies sound good to me right about now, too
Cool Valli! That is so interesting! I have never checked into my name, but I do believe it was just a common name for my time as I know quite a few Deb's my age. But yours, what a history!
ReplyDeleteI love cookies and may have to give yours a try! Thanks Valley Girl!!! (I like that!)
love the combo of coconut and oatmeal!!! wow..i never imagined your name to be Valerie...infact, at first i though you were form India...yes, you are right...it does mean "climber' and also, Valli is one of the wives of Lord Muruga, the other being Deivanai.. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's so interesting to read Valli! There was a girl in my class erm sometime ago called Valerie and we just called her Val but love your version better!
ReplyDeleteRosie x
Hi Val,It's interesting how your name evolved! I don't feel so bad now because I have such a long name, it has been shortened in different ways, so now my friends call me by 4 different names and I know which period of my life certain friends come from depending on what they call me. :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you for that thorough explanation because at one time I was not sure which is your Christian name (lol)
ReplyDeleteBTW, I like the name, Valerie
ReplyDeleteSo I can call you Val! and it'll be right.
ReplyDeleteThat really a fun story with all the twists and curves you've got in it!!
Valerie....what a pretty name! Valli is pretty catchy, too. Cute story.
ReplyDeleteOh-so-very interesting! I like the name Bellini Valli. I know it's you, and I don't confuse you with anyone else.
ReplyDeleteAww what a wonderful story to your name. :)
ReplyDeleteNow that was a most informative post, full of details I've been wondering about! Thanks! And if that is you with the bear, you were (and probably still are) quite the cutie!

ReplyDeleteThe consensus is...just call me Val!!! :)
ReplyDeleteHow funny! I thought it was your real name and used to get in a quandry as to which was your first or last name and didn't want to call you by your last name.
ReplyDeleteLike Nora, I know which parts of my life my friends come from depending on what they call me.
I get Amanda, Mandy, Mands and Manda. Oh and Raptor from when I was a feisty 20something!
Val sounds nice and chummy. That's why I call you that :)
ReplyDeleteAlways good to learn more about our blogging friends.
Have a great day,
"red wine" Maryann :)
What a cool story! Thanks for sharing!!! To me you will always be Valli - I can't help it! :)
ReplyDeleteRoberto thought you were Italian, because of the Bellini thing - I was like no way, she is Canadian! (We love Canadians - being from Vermont).
Thanks for sharing your name story. FYI, have you thought about using butter to replace the shortening? Shortening shortens lives! ;)
ReplyDeleteInteresting name story. I love it! And as for bellinis...I'm with you. Perhaps I should change my name to Bellini Ruth!
ReplyDeleteI love hearing stories like that about how things came to be the way they are. I get asked about my name all the time and usually people don't pronounce it right until they've heard the full story.
ReplyDeleteBellini Ruth sounds great. There are tons of Canadians in Florida and Arizona Jenn!!!!
ReplyDeleteI guess the girl in the picture is you... How cute!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for telling us about your name, I was also wondering what was your real name! :D
Thats a lovely post! And thanks for sharing the background of your name. I think its a great story and I've always liked the name Valerie! Incidentally, in my book you are super if you can hang the curtain rods and shelving on your own!!
